David Sidoo and Sidoo Family Giving Foundation Donate $5,000 to Support Concussion Research at BC Lions Alumni Golf Tournament
VANCOUVER, BC – August 12, 2025 – Philanthropist David Sidoo and the Sidoo Family Giving Foundation have made a $5,000 donation to advance brain health and concussion research at the 19th Annual BC Lions Alumni Association (BCLAA) Golf Tournament.
The contribution will directly support HeadsUpGuys, a globally recognized men’s mental health program based at the University of British Columbia (UBC). Led by Dr. John Ogrodniczuk, Professor of Psychiatry and Director of UBC’s Psychotherapy Program, HeadsUpGuys provides life-changing resources for men facing depression, trauma, and the long-term effects of concussions.
Supporting Former Athletes Facing Invisible Injuries
David Sidoo, a former CFL player himself, understands the challenges that athletes face after their playing days are over—especially when it comes to mental health and concussion-related trauma.
“These players gave everything to the sport,” said Sidoo. “Now it’s our turn to support them, especially when it comes to something as serious and often invisible as brain health.”
Concussions and repeated head injuries remain a major concern in contact sports such as Canadian football. Despite increased awareness, funding for research is still limited, leaving many retired athletes struggling in silence with conditions like chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), depression, and anxiety.
By supporting the BCLAA Golf Tournament, the Sidoo Family Giving Foundation continues its mission to create lasting change in the community. This donation builds upon years of charitable giving focused on education, youth development, and health initiatives—now with an added emphasis on concussion research and mental health care for athletes.
David Sidoo : A Partnership for Impact
The BCLAA Golf Tournament has partnered with HeadsUpGuys for the past three years, providing essential funding to help expand mental health resources for athletes and former players. Dr. Ogrodniczuk’s leadership has made HeadsUpGuys the world’s leading research-informed platform for men’s mental wellness.
“Thanks to supporters like David Sidoo and the Sidoo Family Giving Foundation, we can continue delivering vital resources and research that help men recover from depression and head trauma,” said Dr. Ogrodniczuk.
Sidoo emphasized that his involvement is about more than just writing a cheque.
“This isn’t just a donation—it’s about standing up for the health and futures of our athletes,” he said.
